864-223-1911 Update

UPDATE.

I have continued to get hits and comments on this phone number abuse. I filed complaints with the FCC and the Pennsylvania AG a few weeks ago. I just sent the e-mail below to donotcall@fcc.gov. Keep the pressure on, I guess.

From the looks of this - particularly the "disconnect" message - this guy must be a pure scam. He had what seemed to me an eastern Indian accent. Anyone notice the same or different?

I am amazed that he is overriding the Caller ID system. Who runs that? About halfway down on this page seems to be good information. This is from the mid-1990's:

"5) Can a Caller-ID signal be forged/altered ?

Since the signal is provided by the local Telco switch and the calling party's line is not connected until after the phone is answered, generally the signal cannot be altered from the distant end. Manipulation would have to take place either at the switch or on the called party's line.

"However, the foregoing applies only to a properly designed CNID unit. For instance the Motorola M145447 chip has a "power down" option that wakes the Chip up when the phone rings for just long enough to receive, process, and deliver the CNID signal after which it shuts down until the next call.

"Should this option be disabled, the chip will be in a "listen always" state and it is theoretically possible to "flood" a line making a vulnerable box record successive erroneous numbers.

"I have received a report of a device called "Presto Chango" that can transmit an extra ADSI modem tone after the call has been picked up that will cause a susceptible box to display the later information. It was also reported to me that CNID boxes marketed by US-West as their brand and made by CIDCO have been used to demonstrate the "Presto Chango" box."

So even moreso now, I guess.

Here is my e:

"Folks, I filed a complaint several weeks. I am sending this e-mail because I think I have some unique information.

"Go to my blog, please, and read the comments I have been receiving. Whoever is originating calls from 864-223-1911 is calling all over the nation. They claim to be soliciting for Verizon Wireless, although one of the comments to my posting (linked below, third item in writing) mentions Sprint.

My post.

"The Caller ID comes up an individual – G & S Moore. A reverse lookup gives fuller information – Gary and Scarlett Moore, 115 Carriage Ct., Greenwood, SC 29646. But, most importantly, when you call the number a message comes up saying it is disconnected.

"I do not get a lot of traffic on my blog, but you can see the hits I am getting by looking at the Site meter referrals. You can then select "By location" on the left and see all the places being called.

"This is a scam. Please investigate. Thank you."

  1. This guy is now calling and saying he is a Sprint rep...I work for a phone company and this is a scam!! Do not give any information, if you mistakenly did, immediately contact all 3 credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on your report, contact your bank as well as the carrier he claims to represent. Also, you can contact your state attorney general as well. Phone companies will NEVER call you and ask for your ssn, we do not do that!! If you are one of our customers and we are calling you on a telemarketing call out, we have all of your info in front of us and do not need your ssn!!

  4. 864 223 1911 called last night (11-15)asking for my wife by name, then told me it was the Ghost calling. After suggesting I'd find him and send him to the big black hole, he laughed, loudly crumpled some paper and hung up. I figured it was some kid pranking and hung up. Nuff said.

  5. well guess what?? i live in the UK, and i was visiting my mum, when we arrived at her house, there was a missed call on her phone!! 001 ??? we didnt have a clue so i googled the 001 found out it was the USA then the rest of the number brought up this gary moore character! strange, we went through a few theories, people investigating family trees, my grandmothers name is moore! but then we came apon this site, how very strange we thought why would they ring us in the uk?? our number certainly isnt american!!
well anyway i have stayed at my mums and everyone has left for work school, i was just sat writing my essay for university and the phone rings, its only bloody gary moore!! so i answer, a pakistani or indian man asks if im miss bushell, playing along i say yes!! i then said "who are you?" he answered that he was from 3G a mobile phone company, well i lost my rag and started shouting asking him about this huge scam that number is pulling, he got quite angry and told me he didnt want to sell me anything just wanted some of my time, well i told him to hang up but he didn't. so i abruptly told him to F**k off and to never ring this number again, well that was about 30 mins ago....so far so good!!!!! xxxxx

  8. I was constantly receiving calls starting in October..A man with an Indian sounding accent told me his name was Alex from Sprint. I told him repeatedly to stop calling me. Everytime my husband or I answered the phone it was this same "Alex" person. The last call I got was on Thanksgiving and it was a lady this time w/ the same accent. I filed complaints with the FCC, FTC and my attorney general. I just received a copy of a letter from Sprint addressed to the FCC regarding my complaint. It says that 864-223-1911 wasn't listed for Sprint. The number was last assigned as a residential phone number, but is now no longer in service. THIS IS A SCAM! This scammer is also impersonating himself as a Verizon Wireless rep. They are still investigating.

  9. I get a call from the same guy same # about 4 time a day, He also calls in on #'s that are unavailable and short #'s like 1422,1414,1405,1406,1427,1423,ect. I just registered with the DNC list but I am not sure if it will stop. I have kept an eye on my credit report and talked with Sprint about it. I'll keep an update.

  11. I just got a call from this number. I didn't answer but I did try to call it back and it, of course, said it was disconnected. Now that I have read this post, I am pretty sure that I have talked to this guy, and he claimed he was calling for sprint. I told him I wasn't interested and hung up but that was a couple of months ago.

  12. I kept receiving voice messages from this Indian guy. I never answered my celluar. He's called over 6 times in last 3 days! From the looks of it, sounds like a scamm! I hope the gov. find em prosecutes them and sends them to jail then bubba can take care of the rest :)

  13. I've just landed on your page after plugging this number into Google to see if I could find out where the number was coming from.

A younger sounding guy with an Indian accent called me claiming to be calling on behalf of Sprint and asked if I was (my name) and if my number was (my number).

I just can't believe the timeline on this. I see your post dated in October of 2006, and here it is March 2007.

I think I'll jot off a complaint as well. His number didn't show up on my caller ID, it came up after *69.

    ReplyDelete
  14. it's remarkable to me the longevity. my complaint dead-ended. sprint said it wasn't them, and the fcc said, "ok. file closed."

i got a call at the house the other day. caller id read, "unknown number, unknown caller." he launched into a sprint sale. i stopped him. i said, "by law a phone sale must be identified in the caller id. you are not. this is illegal." he went on talking. i said, "you are violating federal law. do you wish to continue?" he hung up.

i understand one-up idiots like that. but the number in this post has been used for a long time. i researched who controls the caller id database, but the fcc was numb to it.

  15. Yea this same Indian sounding guy has called me...twice. I told him to loose my number but he still called again this morning. He's definitely dedicated, but completely misdirected. My guess is that he won't get caught unless he actually gets someone's information and uses it. Even that's not a sure thing. Ah the FCC... Go tax dollars! Go!

  17. I have been receiving calls from this number. I was receiving them a lot back in November... then they stopped. They have recently started up again. they call my cell phone. sometimes up to three times a day. One would think they'd get the hint that i'm not going to give them anything. Is it illegal to make up info to give them? -chad

  19. These scammers have done their homework, I have reported this to the FCC, sprint, my local company, Brighthouse Networks. I have been called by them for nearly a year now, first it came up on CID as Greenwood, SC now it comes up as unknown. They have probably read this site and know that there are attempts to trace them. You would think this will stop. Let's all hope so. The shortest time between calls I have gotten is 20 minutes (can anyone beat that?) lol

  26. Got a call on caller ID from this number, coming in on a land line. Funny that he called a bellsouth number a few days after I call and spoke to Indian on DSL problems. Could there be a connection. Thanks for the information on this site.

  27. G & S Moore 864-223-1911

This is what the caller ID said. I don't understand why the Caller ID system isn't more strictly monitored. I have received calls from 000-000-0000 even though my phone system does not allow anonymous or blocked calls. How could that be ANYONE'S phone number? What good is the anonymous reject system if someone calls from a number that doesn't belong to them?

I had read elsewhere that companies have to be able to control the outgoing caller ID for business purposes because they use multiple phone lines but have only one main number. I understand that if you're at a hotel that the main phone line of the hotel would come up on the caller ID as opposed to the exact "trunk line" from which you are making the call in your hotel room, but maybe they could figure something out. Make incoming calls to "trunk lines" go to the hotel operator!

Anyway, I was actually on the phone with this guy after a few call attempts he made to me and he was in fact a young sounding East Indian guy. He told me that I had been approved for the best selling phone Verizon Wireless has to offer on the market. What he didn't know was that I was already a Verizon Wireless customer. Finally, after some time, I told him, that I already was a Verizon Wireless subscriber. He said that it made no difference and that he wanted to send me this phone but that he would need to get some more information from me. The scary thing is, I didn't know it was a scam until I realized that he didn't even know I was already a customer! For a free phone just for signing up, I was prepared to give out all of my information, if for anything, just so he could look me up in his system. If I had known what I knew now, I probably would have given him a 9 digit SSN number: 864-22-3191 (the first 9 digits of the phone number he was calling from), then I would've said my name was Whatam Oron.

Please be careful and never give out personal information to someone making an incoming call to you. I'm even hesitant to give it to someone I call, but at least I know I called them.

    Take care!

  29. I started getting 000-000-0000 calls with no one on the line for a while, but didn't do anything about it. Then, on April 1st, at 8:18pm PST, I got my first call - an east indian woman, telling me I've earned a new Sprint phone. I asked her "why would I want a Sprint phone when I already have a contract with another company?" She appologized and hung up. I then have received incoming calls on my cell phone on: 5/1 at 7:38pm, 5/1 at 8:23pm, 5/7 at 8:50pm and 5/9 at 7:56pm. I have logged each one on the donotcall.com site. I have read on other sites that this call may be actually coming from out of the country (like India) and the country code just isn't showing, which would explain the disconnected message when returning the call. I called Verizon to ask what they can do and they said my only option is to change my phone number. I'm seriously thinking about it...

  30. Hey, I didn't have time to read through all the comments to see if anyone else had posted about the Caller ID, but in today's world it is VERY VERY TRIVIAL to spoof one's Caller ID. Basically, it works because the Caller ID system was never meant as a form of authentication, so the entire phone system (in America anyway) just accepts its CID from the phone placing the call. This wasn't much of a problem until somewhat recently. Mostly the people who would spoof their CID were businesses with 100's of phone lines, but every time they would dial out they wanted the same Phone Number to show up on people's CID's. These companies that want to spoof their CID would normally be a pretty large business, so they would already be using large commercial PBX's (Private Branch eXchanges). Using these VERY VERY EXPENSIVE PBX's they can have it send their CID number as whatever they want.

Now, basically what has made it a much larger problem for a lot of people is the influx of VoIP, and more specifically Asterisk (http://www.asterisk.org). Asterisk is a FREE, Open Source, SOFTWARE PBX. So as opposed to all of the old phone hardware people used to have to have that cost 10's of thousands of dollars, and a lot of money for support, anyone can very easily run Asterisk on their computer, route their telephone wires through it, and have as much, if not more control over their phone system than any of these large corporations.

Asterisk runs on Linux/Unix based platforms. It is a very powerful system that gives you full control over every aspect of your phone system. There are many other things Asterisk is very good for besides Spoofing CID, it can route your calls to different places in a building, send calls to different voice mail boxes, display information you want it to using Text-to-Speech with feeds from the Internet, Etc. It is a very useful tool for a lot of people and a lot of businesses, but unfortunately a lot of people take advantage of it to illegally and annoyingly call many many people.

Congress has been working on passing some laws to regulate CID spoofing, and I think the ones that went through, make it illegal to spoof your CID if you have the intent to defraud someone. But of course, that's not going to stop these people. Another way that your average person can use to spoof CID without setting up Asterisk or another PBX, would be to use a service like SpoofCard (http://www.spoofcard.com). Spoof Card is a service very similar to regular Calling Card providers, except when you place the call they allow you to set the CID to whatever you want. All that company is doing with that service to get it to spoof the CID's is just that when people call in to their Calling Card's 1800 Number, they are calling into the companies Asterisk system at their offices. Then they have you enter the # to call, & the # to spoof, then route your call back out to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) with the Spoofed CID, and they're done.

I hope that cleared up Caller ID spoofing.... Search around the web for some of those terms I said if you want to learn more. If I gave any inaccurate information, I apologize. Despite all this, Asterisk is a great application, and is fun to play around with. Go ahead and install it at your house to play around with.... There's lots of fun stuff to do with it.

  33. I've been getting calls from 864-223-1911 for several days now. The first one came at 5am, and quite frankly it scared the crap out of me when the phone ran. (I keep my phone on all the time, as I use the alarm to wake up in the morning, and I get VERY few calls). In my half-asleep state when I reached for the phone, it went flying across the room. I missed the call, tried calling back, and got the busy signal. I was thinking something must be awfully wrong for someone to call me at 5am, right? I have since received 3 more calls from this number, (one at 6am) fumbled with the phone everytime (or was working and couldn't answer) and everytime I tried to call back I got the busy signal. I just now thought to google the number to find out where it was coming from and I find out I'm not alone...

It's best to just ignore numbers you don't recognize instead of getting into a conversation. Then after you're all ticked off, that guy is probably laughing somewhere and it becomes a game. 63. I'm in the Boston area. My phone just rang with the 864-223-1911 in the caller ID. I didn't answer as I didn't know who it was - then plugged it into Google and this page came up. Thanks for the info.

  64. I received a call today from 864-223-1911 on my cell phone. When I answered it was a woman with an East Indian accent said her name was Christine calling for Disney World. I told her I didn't accept calls such as this on my cell phone. I'm located in St Louis, MO area.

  68. He/she must be calling massachusetts numbers now. My guess is that he just randomly picks numbers and tries them. I have a prepaid cell phone number not listed anywhere. I've been receiving calls from this number every other day for the past few weeks. This morning on my way to work I answered the phone and talked to Christine. She told me I was selected to receive a free phone from Sprint. She asked me my name, address, ssn and even driver's license number. I made them all up. Since I was kinda prepared to talk to those guys I said my name was Fokmi Well. It was
a lot of fun listening to Christine repeat my name. Anyways, now they want my credit card # to charge the S&P. Btw this is a calling center. I was able to hear many people talking behind and they were all repeating the same thing "you've been selected ... blah-blah".

  70. 864.223.1911 called my home at in Ohio at 6:54 pm trying to sell me a sprint phone. Told I was on the DNC list and hung up. He called back and I didn't answer. Between 7:04pm and 9:35 recieved 25 calls from him (and yes he sounds like he is from a froreign country). Finally decided to play his game, gave him a false name, birthdate. Driver license number. When he asked for my SS I hung up, he called back. I called the police. They came out and took a report. I have Direct TV on a 57 inch screen. One of the nice things about satellite tv is the ability to hook up a phone line and when the phone rings it shows up on the TV screen and logs the call. I showed the log to the police officer. As she was making the report, he called again. This idiot was arguing with the officer. Telling her i bought a sprint phone and will be billed if he could not speak to me immediately. He finallly hung up on the officer. 1/2 hour later the calles started again, at 11:04P.M. I tookk the phone off the hook. I filed complaints with the State Attorney Generals office and the FTC. Somebody please find thei operation

  71. In Lansing, MI here. Just got through reading everything here. Have been called twice in the past two days. The person hung up once and left no message the second time.

Has anyone tried playing along to give some info, but then asking for his instead. Perhaps coming up with some excuse that you're busy, etc and would really like to get back with him.

I know it's a long shot, but what's there to lose?

  77. I started to get calls from this "low life with nothing else to do" a few weeks now, but has not had a chance having a chat with him yet. So I decided to report him to donotcall, but then I was curious to find out about this company. So here I am with all of you - the victims.....

I got a GREAT idea that I used many many moons ago and it worked like a MIRACLE ! So.....I got some nasty guy calling me & talked dirty. I asked him politely not to call me, but I guess he got more pleasure knowing he irritates me so he kept calling back. Well, the very last call he made to me probably the very last time he's able to hear my voice for the last time.

The MIRACLE message I got for him was when he called and I confirmed that was him on the phone I screamed from the top of my lung directly into the phone!!!! YEAH !!!!!! That's right, baby. SCREAM.......Now you all got the message. BTW....ready for this? I singed in the choir back then as a Soprano so singing HIGH notes are my specialty.

I REALLY AM SO EXCITED WHEN I CATCH THIS LOW LIFE NEXT TIME HE CALLS ME!!!!

Wish me luck & I wish you all luck. Happy Days are here again..... :-))

  79. That number called me at 7:45 am!! I was not happy. Yes I was up and about to go to work but I sitll don't like calls that early in the morning unless it is an emergency. I didn't answer it though I let the answering machine get it and they hung up on the machine. I then just got a call from Unknown Name Unknown Number and normally I don't answer these either but I have been getting a number of them calling and hanging up on my machine so I answered to see who it was. And it was a lady apparently from India (I couldn't really understand a word she said) and all I could understand was something about Sprint and I just hung up. My way of dealing with these calls and all calls I don't recognize the number for is to not answer if the answering machine gets it and they hang up then I know it wasn't important and if they do start to leave a message and I know it isn't important I pick up the phone and hang up on them mid-message on the machine. I have gotten to where I do not answer any call unless it is a number of someone I know. I think that is really the best way to handle it. If it is important they will leave a message and then you can listen to it and decide whether or not you should call them back or not.

  80. I received a call from this number today 11/1/07 at 12:47pm with the name of M C Mitchell on the caller ID. I have not tried to call it back but after reading this after googling the number I assume it has nothing to do with anything important. Thanks everyone for your input!!! Obviously he is still up to it just changed his name...what can we do to stop this guy the government obviously isn't doing anything to protect us from him! How sad!!

  81. I just received a call from this number and it had MC Mitchell in the caller ID. I googled the number and found this blog. I just don't understand why the phone company can't do something about this.
